Former Odisha cricket captain Prashant Mohapatra dies due to Covid-19

Prashant Mohapatra, Former Odisha Ranji Player, BCCI Match Referee & Level-2 coach Dies, Condolences offered.

Former Odisha cricket team captain Prashant Mohapatra died on Wednesday due to Covid-19 at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Dr. SN Mohanty, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, said that even all the efforts of doctors could not save him. The 47-year-old Mohapatra took the last breath at AIIMS Bhubaneswar at 7.51 am.

Prashant's father and Rajya Sabha MP Raghunath Mohapatra also died on May 9 due to Covid-19. While Prashant's brother Jasbant is also infected with Covid-19 and his treatment is also being done in this hospital.

Prashant Mohapatra was born on 1 September 1973. Prashant was a right-handed batsman and made his Ranji Trophy debut against Bihar in 1990.

He also played in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy for the Eastern Zone. Prashant played 45 first class matches, scoring 2196 runs at an average of 30.08 and with the help of five centuries and 11 half-centuries. After Prashant retired, the Indian Cricket Board appointed him as the match referee. He was also a Level-2 coach.

BCCI's steps to stop age and domicile fraud.

MEASURES TO STOP AGE AND DOMICILE FRAUDS

Board of Control of Cricket in India is a board that takes all the decisions regarding cricket in India. Since BCCI is responsible for every activity of cricket in India, its the responsibility of BCCI to ensure measures that would check the age and domicile fraud.

There are some measures that BCCI has taken this month to check the disturbances and hindrances in the smooth and right functioning of boards and players caused by the wrong information provided by some players regarding their date of birth and domicile. Measures to be taken will depend on voluntary disclosure or non disclosure.

VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE OF AGE

• In case of voluntary disclosure of original date of birth i.e players who will disclose there real age by themselves would not have to face any consequences. 
• No actions will be taken on them.
• Players who themselves will accept that they have submitted the fake or tampered date of birth proof will be allowed to participate in their respective age groups.
• Players will have to submit supporting documents of date of birth alongwith signed letter or email to BCCI age verification department.
• Last date of submission of such letter/ email is 15th September, 2020.

NON DISCLOSURE OF ORIGINAL AGE

• Players who will be found guilty of providing fake age proof will be banned for two years and will not be allowed to participate in any tournament of any age group.

• Such players will be banned to participate in any tournament under BCCI and State boards.

MEASURES FOR UPCOMING SESSION

• Players who will be caught with wrong age information will be suspended for two years.
• Even after expiration of such ban, players would not be allowed to participate in any age group tournaments.
• They would be prohibited to participate in any tournament organised by state boards or BCCI.
• Players should be of the age of 14- 16 years to be eligible to participate in U-16 tournaments.
•  there will be restrictions on the number of years allowed to participate in the BCCI U-19 tournaments, if players are found guilty for providing date of birth which is two year more than the age in their birth certificate.

DOMICILE FRAUD

• If players would be found to be registered with fake domicile, he/she will be banned for two years.
• Voluntary disclosure scheme does not apply in domicile fraud case.

BCCI is in mood to use zero tolerance policy for players who provide fake information. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, BCCI secretary Jay Shah and NCA cricket head Rahul Dravid have said that such cases are creating a lot of problem and loss in long run to true and good players as well as board. Now such activities will not be tolerated and strict actions will be taken. BCCI is planning to take more strict actions in future for these type of activities.
