"Took Too Many Balls": SunRisers Hyderabad Captain David Warner Blames His Slow Fifty For Defeat Against Chennai Super Kings, CSK Vs SRH ( IPL 2021)

The start of the Delhi leg of the IPL 2021 season hasn’t changed the fortunes of the two sides. While CSK registered their fifth win in a row to regain the top position in the points table with 10 points, SRH continued to languish at the bottom with just 2 points from 6 matches.

The problem for SRH has usually been their poor finishes to the innings but this time it was an unexpected knock by David Warner who took 55 balls to hit 57 runs. Change of venue didn't quite produce a change in fortunes for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as David Warner and team suffered a 7-wicket defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Wednesday. The SRH skipper was duly apologetic for the nature of his innings after the match. He said that the responsibility of loss is on him as he took too many balls.

A late assault from Kane Williamson (26* off 10) and fifties from Manish Pandey (61) and Warner guided SRH to 171/3 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Ruturaj Gaikwad's destroying 75-run knock and a fifty from Faf du Plessis (56) helped CSK chase the target down with nine balls to spare.

"I take full responsibility for the way I batted. I batted slow and hit the fielders. The way Manish batted was exceptional. Kane and Kedhar got us to a respectable total, but at the end of the day, I take full responsibility," David Warner said at the post-match presentation ceremony of IPL 2021.

"Probably 15 good shots to fielders and they are the ones that make or break the innings. At the end of the day, I took too many balls. We fought well to the end, but the two [CSK] openers batted well. I'm not too sure. He was going to bat 4 and at the end of the day, we soaked up too many balls. At the end of the day, he bats at 4 and that's his job,"  David Warner added.

I think we have a day game here as well. 170 is par during the night, but we need to be positive. We're a bunch of fighters. The guys will be hurt by this but we will be up and about," David Warner said.

The CSK openers showed their intentions from the beginning of the run-chase.

Both the openers started taking on SRH bowlers and smashed them all around the ground. The duo added 54 runs in the Powerplay overs. The openers continued their carnage as CSK crossed the three-figure mark in the 11th over.

Du Plessis raised his 19th IPL fifty in 32 deliveries in the 11th over in IPL 2021.

In the very next over, it was the turn of Gaikwad to bring up his fifty -- his fifth in the competition. Gaikwad was clean bowled by Rashid Khan in the 13th over but not before the 24-year-old Maharashtra batsman had all but sealed the clash.

Rashid in his last over gave a double blow to CSK as he dismissed both du Plessis (56) and Moeen Ali (15) off successive balls. Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina remained unbeaten on seven and 17 runs respectively as CSK won the 23rd game of IPL 2021 with 9 balls to spare.

IPL 2021: SRH will next take on Rajasthan Royals on May 2.
