There have been uncountable records in cricket history. New records are made and old are broken. Well records are made to be broken.  Achieving something means a lot for the achiever but it means more to be remembered as 'First’ to have done something that no one else has ever done. It's the occasion when one gets the privilege to write his name in the history books. There have been many ‘firsts’ in cricket some of which have been included in this article.

First Hundred in Test :

Test cricket is the oldest version of cricket. It is the longest format of cricket and is considered to have the highest standards among all formats.

Test matches are played between team who are affiliated by International Cricket Council.


Alexander Charles Bannerman was an Australian cricketer who was born on 3rd of July 1851.

He was a right handed batsman and left arm medium pace bowler. He was also known as Alec Bannerman.


The first century in test cricket was recorded in the nineteenth century. He became the first batsman to reach the 100 mark on 15 March 1877. He scored 165* out of Australia's total 245.

He is also the first batsman to score a run as well as the first batsman to make century in debut match.


First Hundred in one day internationals :

One Day International was a result of the first change in context of duration of match. This change occurred because of decreased popularity and audience during the 20th century. Each team had to play 60 overs till 1983. After 1983, 50 overs were given to each team in one day internationals which continues till now.


First hundred in one day internationals was scored by Deniss Amiss in 1972 against Australia at Old Trafford where he scored 103 runs. This was just a second ever one day international match. Dennis Amiss was a right handed batsman and left arm medium as well as slow left arm orthodox bowler who was born on 7 April 1943.

Twenty twenty cricket is the shortest format of professional cricket at international level where each team is given twenty overs each. Although this is the shortest format of cricket but it involves a huge amount of risk of injuries and lots of energy. 

The first twenty twenty match at international level was played between the women's team of England and New Zealand on 5th of August 2004.

The first men’s twenty twenty match was played at Eden Park of Auckland between Australia and New Zealand which was won by Australia on 17 February 2005.

First t-20 century was smashed by a devastating batsman Chris Gayle on 11 September 2007. Chris Gayle is a left handed batsman and right arm spin bowler who was born on 21 September 1979. He scored 117* for 57 balls in first match of twenty twenty world cup, 2007 and became the first batsman to score a hundred in all the three formats of cricket.

Charles Bannerman had the record of highest runs of 165* till 11 & 12 August 1884.

On 11 and 12 August 1884 Billy Murdoch who was an Australian right handed batsman and a captain of the team scored the first double century of test cricket and went on to score 211 runs in 525 balls which included 24 fours  against England at the Oval.

Billy was a right handed batsman and an occasional wicket keeper. He batted at number three.


Reginald Erskine Foster who was a batsman of England team was the first batsman to score double century on his debut match. He went on to score 287 runs hitting 37 fours against Australia on 11 December 1903 at Sydney.

Belinda Clarke is a former Australian cricketer who was a right hand batsman and right arm off- break bowler, born on 10 september, 1970. Belinda Jane Clarke has represented several teams in her career like Australia Women, New South Wales Women, Prime Minister's XI, Victoria Women, etc.

In December 1997 she became the first ever batsman in both categories to score double centuries when she smashed 229* in just 155 balls against Denmark at MIG Club ground, Mumbai. Because of her blasting double century Australia scored huge 412 runs losing just three wickets.


Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar also called The God of Cricket is a former Indian cricketer who was born on  24 April 1973.

On 24 February, 2010 Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman in men's category to score 200 not out in just 147 balls in which he hit 25 fours and 3 sixes against South Africa in Gwalior.

First Triple century :

Three Hundred runs are not so common in cricket. It has been 31 times that people got to see a player reaching 300 mark. These triple centuries have been hit by 27 players of 8 nations.

Andy Sandham on 3 April 1930 scored first triple century in the history of cricket. Andy Sandham was an English batsman who scored 325 runs against West Indies ( first test series hosted by West Indies) at Sabina Park, Kingston.

Virender Sehwag has the record of fastest triple century in terms of number of balls faced.

The quickest triple century was made by Wally Hammond in 1932–33 in 4 hours and 48 minutes.


First 400 runs :

Till 2004 Matthew Hayden of Australia had the record of highest run in a match which was 380 against Zimbabwe on 9 October 2003 at WACA ground of Perth.

On 12 April 2004, one year prior to Matthew Hayden's record of 380 runs, Brian Lara scored a massive 400* and wrote his name in the history forever by becoming the first player to score 400.

 He is still the only player to score 400 runs in a match. He took 582 balls to reach such a milestone. He smashed 43 fours and and 4 sixes to make this record.

Herschelle Gibbs was a South African cricketer who was born on 23 February 1974 in Cape Town, South Africa.

He was a right handed opener batsman and right arm medium pace bowler. He was also called Scooter by his teammates. He was known for his aggressive batting and his contributions in fielding.

It was an opening match of 2007 world cup and South Africa was all set to go against Netherlands 16 March 2007. It was 30th over of the innings when Gibb's beast mode got activated and he assaulted Daan Van Bunge of Netherlands by hitting six sixes in and over and went on to score 72 runs in 40 balls before being bowled out by the same Daan Van Bunge. In this match South Africa scored a massive total of 353 in 40 overs.

Yuvraj Singh, a former Indian cricketer, was born on 12 December 1981 in Chandigarh, India. He was a left handed aggressive batsman and slow left arm orthodox bowler.

Yuvraj Singh has been awarded with India's second highest award in sports i.e. Arjuna Award by Government of India.

It was a match between India and England in World Cup of 2007. Everything was going calm and normal but then Andrew Flintoff decided to exchange some words with Yuvraj Singh which triggered him and it was Stuart Broad who payed the penalty. After getting sledged by Andrew, Yuvraj decided to take matter in his hand and smashed back to back 6 sixes in Stuart Broad's over. 

Yuvraj Singh, after hitting 6 sixes in an over, became the first batsman to to so in twenty twenty format of cricket.

First hat-trick in test :

Hat-tricks are very rare in cricket. Hat-trick is an event when a bowler dismisses three different batsman on three consecutive deliveries. Such an event has occurred 45 times in test cricket which makes it less rare than triple centuries which have been scored 31 times.

Frederick Robert Spofforth was an Australian right arm fast bowler who was born on 9 September 1853 in New South Wales, Australia. He was also called "The Demon Bowler".

He hold the record of being first bowler to take hat-trick in test cricket. He took his hat-trick against England at Melbourne.

Fred also holds the record of being the first bowler to take fifty wickets in test cricket.


First hat-trick in ODI :

Jalal Ud Din was a former Pakistani cricketer and present level 3 coach of Pakistan. He was born on 12 June 1959 in Karachi of Pakistan. He was a right arm medium fast bowler who made he debut 14 October 1982 against Australia.

On 20 September 1982 he became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in one day internationals. He took consecutive three wickets against Australia at Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad. His hat-trick came at a time when Pakistan was in great need of it in that match.

Myrtle Ethel Maclagan was an English Cricketer who was born on 2 April 1911 in Ambala of Haryana ( then United provinces of India).

She was a right arm off spin bowler and was known for scoring runs. She is the first women cricketer to make century which came on 4 January 1935.

She is the first player to take five wicket haul in an innings against Australia. However, in the same match England's Mary Spear and Australia's Anne Palmer also recorded five wicket hauls.

Dennis Keith Lillee is a former Australian cricket who was born on 18 July 1949 in Subiaco of western Australia. Dennis Lillee was right arm fast bowler whp was known for his aggressive bowling and impassioned nature.

Lillee became the first bowler to take five wicket haul in one day international. He did this during a Prudential World Cup of 1975 against Pakistan. He took 5 wickets for 34 runs in 12 overs in that innings.

Umar Gul is a right arm medium fast Pakistani bowler who was born on 14 April 1984 in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Just after making his comeback to Pakistan side in 2006 he made himself the spearpoint of the Pakistan's bowling attack.

His biggest achievement came during the World Cup of 2009 against New Zealand which was held in England. 

On 18th March 2009 he became the first bowler to take five wicket haul in twenty20 cricket when he decimated New Zealand's batting line up. He took 5 wickets just for 6 runs. New Zealand was all out on just 99 runs in 18.3 overs. And Pakistan side chased this score convincingly in 13.1 overs losing 4 wickets.


First 10 wickets in an innings :

James Charles Laker was a right arm off break bowler in English team who was born on 9 February 1922 in Shipley, West Riding of Yorkshire.

He made his debut in test cricket against West Indies on 21 January 1948.

On 31 July 1956 James Charles Laker became the first bowler to pick all 10 wickets in a test innings against Australia. He picked up a total of 19 wickets in that test match against Australia.

Laker has appeared in 46 test matches and took 193 wickets with an average of 21.24. 

Laker has a best bowling figure of 10 wickets for 53 runs.

Anil Kumble is the second bowler in the history to take 10 wickets in a test match innings. He took 10 wickets by giving 74 runs runs against Pakistan in New Delhi. in 1999.


First bowler to take 500 wickets in test :

Courtney Andrew Walsh  was a West Indian right arm fast bowler who was born on 30 October 1962.

He has taken three wickets in a test match thrice and five wickets haul in an inning 22 times which shoes how great bowler he was. Walsh has also taken five wickets haul in one day internationals against Sri Lanka in December,1986. He has appeared in 132 test matches and 205 one day internationals.. His last test match was against South Africa on 19th of April, 2001. 

In 2001 at Port of Spain in Trinidad, South Africa, Wash became the first bowler to take 500 wickets in test cricket against South Africa.

He also holds the record of having the best bowling figure in a test match as a captain which is 13 wickets for 52 runs.


First bowler to take 500 wicket in ODIs :

Wasim Akram was a Pakistan right arm fast bowler and right handed batsman. He was born on 3 June 1966 in Lahore, Pakistan.

He was also called "The Sultan of Swing" because of his abilities to swing the ball in any condition, on any type of pitch and with both types of balls i.e. white and red ball either it is new or old. How ever he was known more for his reverse swing.

He has played 104 tests and 356 ODIs. his best bowling figures in test is 7 wickets for 119 runs and five wickets for just 15 runs in one days. 

He has taken 5 wickets in an inning 25 times and 5 wickets in an one day match 6 times. Akram has taken 4 hat-tricks in international cricket, two in each format.

On 25 February 2003, Wasim Akram became the first bowler to take 500 wickets in one day internationals when he dismissed Nick Statham of Holland in Pool A match of that world cup. Though he had to wait for this wicket for bit long in that match but once that wicket fell in his bag it was overwhelming and historic. He achieved this milestone ion hi 345th one day international match.

Because of his dominance in bowling and his capabilities to score runs he is considered to be one of the best all-rounders of all time.


First 500 wickets in twenty20 :

Dwayne John Bravo is a West Indian cricketer who was born on 7 October 1983.

He is a right handed batsman and right arm fast medium bowler and plays all formats fo cricket.

He is known for his aggressive batting and cunning bowling. He is successful both as a bowler and a batsman. 

He has played 40, 1644 and 66 matches in test, one day international and twenty twenty cricket respectively.

He has taken 86, 199 and 52 wickets in test, ODI and twenty20 international.

He became the first bowler to take 500 wickets in twenty twenty cricket format when he dismissed Zouks’ Rahkeem Cornwall  in the fourth over of the match during the CPL match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks.

This all-rounder has 514 preys in his account. This great all-rounder, however, announced his retirement from test cricket on 31 January 2015. He took retirement from all formats of international cricket in month of October 2018. He will continue playing and entertaining us in franchise t20 cricket.
